Preperation of the rose

I used a Nikon D200 SLR and I also used a tripod and remote.
The background was simply a black piece of material which was pinned to my wall.
To hold the rose in place I used oasis in a jug of water.
I had to make sure that the camera did not move at all, so the photos would not be different. To make sure that the camera did not move and go out of focus I used a remote to take the photos so that even the vibration of the camera did not move the placement.

Photoshop editing of the rose

To follow the theme of our narrative we have decided to put the rose in black and white except the rose head this fitted with the ‘arty’ look that was constant through our video.

For the photos of the rose to look professional, I have decided to edit each photo one by one using Photoshop. This required a lot of patients and hard work.
First I uploaded photo 1 onto a new blank background. I then using the magic wand tool select the outside of the rose and used the erase colour tool, this on a short cut was: Ctrl Shift U. I did this to make it quicker than pressing on the colour settings. This erased the background colour which left me with an off black background.
To make the stork and leafs of the rose in black and white. I had to select the area using the magnetic lasso tool, making sure that I did not select the rose head as this was staying in colour. Then when selected I used the Ctrl Shirt U key to erase the colour this left the rose stork ad leafs grey. I then zoomed into the photograph using the + sign on the keyboard to find any areas that I did not select. I used the magic wand to correct the areas I missed.
This is the before and after of editing the photographs
Before

After

After editing photos 1-131 I imported them into Adobe Premier Elements

The making of the rose video

For the first video I imported the clips into premier elements, clip by clip. I then exported the whole video as one. I opened a new project and imported the movie. To get the rose to open and die quickly I had to speed up the video from 6.00.00 minutes to 00.13.00 seconds. This made the rose look jerky and created the effect I wanted. This is shown below

I then explored the effects on Premier Elements; I found no effects that I could use to make the video look a authentic old film. I then looked further and found a effect on Windows Movie Maker. There were several different effects that I could chose from, including different styles from different Eras.
I found two different effects that I liked, these are shown below:

After lots of discussion with our group we decide to use effect 1 this is because it showed the detail of the rose, where as the older effect look away all the hard work we put in when editing each picture.

This is the final edit:

DVD disk label rough cut feedback

We asked a few people within our class to give us some feedback on our DVD label to see what improvements we could make. This was the feedback we were given:

Good points:
• The rose looks effective and bold
• The colours work well and reflect the video
• Simple and effective

Bad points:
• The writing on the rose does not look as effective as we originally thought it would
• Everything not spread out enough so looks a bit crowded

As I group we then decided on some changes which we thought needed to be made. We decided the writing on top of the rose did not look effect and crowded the DVD label which made the label look very amateur. We then moved the writing to the sides of the DVD cover to create a more organised label. We decided that the rose did look good in the cover so kept it the same. The use of the three colours creates a look for our band which I like.

DVD cover rough cut feedback

We asked a few people within our class to give us some feedback on our DVD cover rough cut to see what improvements we could make. This was the feedback we were given:

Good points:
• Image is very strong
• Editing is good
• Setting is good for the shot
• 3 images on back page look good

Bad points:
• font on back page doesn’t look effective and doesn’t match the theme
• not enough information
• title covers lighthouse

We then decided as a group to change certain things on the cover to make the DVD cover as effective as possible. We moved the title so that the lighthouse was clear and made the shot look effective. We changed the font for the songs to create a better font which is more in theme with our video. We kept the main image as it proved popular with our feedback.

Advert rough cut feedback

We asked a few people within our class to give us some feedback on our advert rough cut to see what improvements we could make. This was the feedback we were given:

Good points:
• The rose looks effective and bold
• The colours work well and reflect the video
• Simple and effective

Bad points:
• No showing of CD or DVD cover therefore not promoting the product well enough.
• Not enough information on the page
• Slightly empty page

As a group we then decided we needed some change to make our advert as good as possible. We decided the page was slightly plain and we needed more information to promote the product well so we decided to add in an image of our DVD and CD cover which showed the band and promoted the product. We decided to keep the rose the same because it was liked by our target audience and we liked the idea of a clear motif which is shown throughout the advert and video.

Music video feedback

As a class we then watched every groups music video, we watched each video twice and evaluated each group critically. This really helped to set a standard for the class by using mark schemes which gave me a reality to how good the video had to be. I have been given a sheet with questions on to allow me to give constructive criticism such as: what is good about this music video? What do you not like about this video? What would you do to this music video? Out of five how would you rate this video? I think this was a very useful process because it allowed us as a class to see what people actually thought as it was all written anonymous.

Good points about my video:

• black and white affect “creates a arty feel”
• Band looks energetic and real
• Some good shots throughout
• Beach setting looked good

Bad points about my video:

• Too many band shots
• Narrative story line not clear enough
• Not enough variation within band shots
• Setting not great for band

Overall I found that the peer assessments was very useful as it got other people’s opinions on our video, it also gave me an idea of the standard of work being produced. Everything which was mentioned in our feedback has been changed in our final video, I think that alone shows how important peer assessment is. As a whole on rough cuts we got a 2/3 which is not bad for the first ruff cut, as a group we will be aiming for a 3 /4 for our final video. Although I do think the 2/3 was due to people being too nice and not as hard as what an examiner would say. I think since the rough cut the video has improved dramatically.

Music video rough cut

We have spent 4 weeks working on our music video to create this rough cut there are many aspects of our video which need a lot of work but by doing a rough cut we have created a base for our video. For legal and copyright reasons I have deleted all audio. In the final video audio will be present for the Examiners copy.

Filming diary

We began our filming with our first shoot at the beach. We had thought about our setting clearly therefore we were down there from 7am to get the suset panning shot which is now being used in our video. The lighting was great by about 7:30 when we were all set up. We had disgussed our costumes and used the white dresses throughout the entire narrative to complimnent the black and white theme. We managed to get some interesting and good shots on this Thursday morning which made the main of our rough cut video. Using a tripod and camcorder was all we needed as natural light was provided. The only prop used was a piece of parchment, which enabled us to focus on the acting and the storyline.

Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday
19/10/09.20/10/09.21/10/09
We began out performance shoots on these dates, we filmed in the drama hall with lighting and a 5 piece band. The first performance shoot was noticeably unprepared and I feel this showed in the play back of the footage, we decide to reshoot the whole band performance as we found it was not at the standard that the rest of our music video was at.

Sunday 18/11.09
We decided to add more footage of the two main characters, so again we arranged to meet at the same location and same spot for continuity issues. We shot somemore footage which has been used in our video. we used the same equiptment as what was used for the earlier narrative shots.

Saturday 7/11/09
We now were completing our third and final narrative shoot, we were filming two girls to create this image of the 2 characters as children, we used a still image camera to connect the stop start imagery used in the opening and closing shots of the rose. This works effectivly throughout.

These are some of the images which were taken on the day of the shoot

Thursday 19/11/09
The reshoot of the Band took place at the lighthouse beach; this was a running theme through the video which allowed us to create interesting and unique band shots. Filming for only two hours of performance shots required me to do a lot of preparation. We, as a group needed to arrange who was bring what and a time that was appropriate , we found that filming early in the morning worked well for all members of our groups due to other commitments on night times. So at 7 am we arranged to meet at the lighthouse in the area, seven was the earliest we could film this was because of the winter season and the late sunrise, the darkness would effect the filming as we were using natural lighting. We started setting up prompt; we made sure that the lighthouse was visible in the background to create the correct mise-en-scene. By 7.45 we were set up with a full drum kit, guitar, amplifier and microphone. We used mini speakers to play the song so that we could hear the music and play along to the tempo.

These are some shots which were taken throughout the set up of the band shots on the beach. You can see the clear change of lighting within the space of about 30 minutes which really enabled me to get good clear shots with good lighting. After four full songs playbacks including static and mobile shots we each filmed one another to use as band close up to fit with codes and conventions of music videos we felt as though we had reached our full potential on the beach. Due to our limited time, efficiently we also look still images that would be used on our DVD cover on the same day which worked out well as the weather was good considering its winter.

Animatics

I have used premiere elements to create an animatic from my original story board. this will be used as a guide line for when we shoot the actual music video, we will be able to look and see the events running order clearly which will enable to process of making the video to go alot smoother.
